Michael Nkambule, a former Kaizer Chiefs player known for his technical skills and journey from amateur to professional football, has passed away after being involved in a car accident. The news was confirmed by Siyabonga Moloi, a family friend and spokesperson, to Soccer Laduma.
Nkambule's career was marked by significant milestones. He began his professional journey in Europe with French club Strasbourg during his teenage years, though he did not break into the first team. Upon returning to South Africa, Nkambule played for SuperSport United and Kaizer Chiefs before moving on to Black Leopards.
Beyond his playing career, Nkambule was deeply involved in grassroots football development and community upliftment. He co-owned a football club in Etwatwa with Moloi and often participated in legends matches alongside former Bafana Bafana internationals.
Family friend Moloi shared: 'Michael and I co-owned a football club in Etwatwa, so this is devastating for me. I'm speaking to you from his family home, where relatives have gathered.' The car accident that claimed Nkambule's life occurred about two weeks ago when the vehicle he was driving overturned.
He was initially rushed to Far East Rand Hospital before being transferred to Johannesburg Gen Hospital, where he underwent surgery for spinal cord injuries. Despite a successful operation, his condition worsened, leading to his passing on Friday.
Tributes have begun pouring in from across the country as former teammates and clubs remember Nkambule's career that took him from the dusty streets of Daveyton to the professional fields of Europe and South Africa.
