SuperSport United FC have suspended head coach Lehlohonolo Seema after a poor start to the Betway Premiership season. The club, known as Siwelele, have taken just two points from their opening five matches and are yet to record a victory.
The decision was made following Sunday's defeat at Dobsonville Stadium. The club is now considering promoting reserve team coach Godfrey Mosoetsa to take charge on an interim basis. Seema was appointed last season with the initial goal of steering the club clear of relegation, a task made harder by a significant player exodus at the end of that campaign.
Squad changes and a tough fixture
That exodus included the departure of former captain and goalkeeper Ricardo Goss, who returned to Mamelodi Sundowns after his loan ended. The club moved quickly to secure a replacement, bringing in goalkeeper Jody February on loan from Sundowns over the weekend. However, February was not selected for the match that ultimately triggered Seema's suspension.
The timing is far from ideal, with a daunting league fixture against champions Mamelodi Sundowns at Loftus Stadium scheduled for Wednesday. The club's recent form, which includes a 1-1 draw with Golden Arrows in their last outing of the previous season, has left them in a precarious early position.
A second coaching departure
If Seema's departure is made permanent, he would become the second Betway Premiership coach to leave his post this season, following Sekhukhune United's parting with Cedric Kaze earlier in the campaign. The club has not issued an official statement on the suspension's duration or the search for a permanent successor.
For now, the immediate focus shifts to Mosoetsa and preparing for the Sundowns clash. The interim coach will have to rally a squad that has shown flashes of promise but lacks consistency, as evidenced by a recent run of form reading one win, one draw and three losses.
